• What We Do

Relationships between schools and Ngā Ratonga Tautoko are key to identifying and supporting young people experiencing significant absence from education. We work alongside schools to coordinate support for students where barriers to attendance are impacting engagement and wellbeing.

We can support students where there is:

    • Persistent or significant non-attendance
    • Complex or multiple barriers affecting engagement
    • A need for coordinated support across services
    • Whānau requiring additional connection or navigation support

    How We Work

We do not replace existing school attendance processes. Instead, we work in partnership with schools to strengthen what is already in place and provide additional support where needs are complex.

Our approach is guided by the Te Ako Manaaki Framework, with a focus on strong relationships, shared responsibility, and practical, collaborative responses that support positive outcomes for young people. We can support students with the following criteria:

Young People must be aged between 6 – 16 years old.

There must be significant unjustified or pattern of absence for a period of time.

School must make a formal referral through the MOE, legally giving us permission to begin working.
